Israel Philately: Personalized Generic Stamps & Covers (PGS)

Another aspect of stamp collecting that has become extremely popular with Israel collectors and indeed collectors worldwide are – personalized or generic stamp sheets - where labels of a personal nature or particular subject matter are attached to the stamps. The stamp and label can then be used to mail a domestic letter if so desired, and a nice philatelic souvenir is created. Once a label is removed from the stamps, the only value left of course is the stamp itself. (Some countries such as Canada allow you to print the personalized image on the stamp itself, creating a true "personalized" stamp which can be used for regular mail.

While there is no limit (within reason of course) as to the different subjects that individuals can and do put on their own personalized stamps/labels, the Israel Post Office is of course much more discriminating in its selection of such issues. The fact is that from time to time there are special events that take place which may not merit the Israel Philatelic Services issuing a stamp; however, they do indeed merit some philatelic product to commemorate the event. Good examples are the Pope's Visit, Kristallnacht, a particular holiday or a famous person, etc etc. In such cases the Israel Philatelic Services issues their own personalized stamp/label, thereby giving the item the "aura" of a semi-official issue. Of course in some cases commercial concerns may also dictate the subject matter such as Disney characters, a particular entertainment group, etc. Although Scott, Michel and other catalogues may not list them these issues are, however, listed in the popular Israel Carmel Catalogue. We will be listing here all issues by the Israel Philatelic services, as well as a few private ones produced by bona fide stamp dealers and organizations that we believe are worthy of inclusion in an Israel collection, due to their subject matter.

At present there is no comprehensive catalogue system for these sheets. So to simplify matters, Judaica sales will list all such items in 2 formats. For all ISRAEL PHILATELIC SERVICES sheets issued the Item # will read as PGS001, PGS002, PGS003 etc etc. For all COMMISSIONED SHEETS BY DEALERS OR ORGANIZATION the Item # will read as PGS-X001, PGS-X002, PGS-X003 etc etc. Both these numbers are Judaica Sales numbers and are not listed in any catalogues. This allows for commissioned sheets to follow directly after those issued by the Israel Philatelic Services on our website. Where we have a FDC (see below) we also have the exact date the sheet was released, and that date appears in the date column. Where we do not have a FDC, the date will be left blank. We are actively trying to compile all such dates and we will slowly replace the printing date with the FDC date. Dates DO NOT necessarily follow in a chronological sequence.

The description column will contain a comprehensive description of the issue, including whether the sheet was issued by the Israel Philatelic Service or commissioned by a dealer or organization; dealers will not be named, organizations will. There are no official First Day cancels for these issues, but FDC are generally prepared by various dealers with a generic cancel on the date the particular issue becomes available through the Israel Philatelic Services. Consequently we may have 2 or 3 different FDC prepared by different dealers for a particular issue; in such cases the dealer will be identified and the FDC catalogue number will be followed by a dot and number (EX: PGS001.1; PGS001.2) etc to indicate how many different FDC we have of that particular sheet. Of course no such FDC dates exist in the case of dealer or organization produced sheets – in such cases dates will be left blank.

To browse through the list (the number of pages will depend on the size of the list) simply use the navigation buttons under the list of items. The buttons read as; First - takes you to the beginning of the list, Previous - takes you back one page, Next - takes you forward one page, Last - takes you to the end of the list (not the last yearly listing).
