001 David Roberts RA born in 1796 and died in 1864 was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia published by F.G. Moon in London 1842-49 which he produced during the 1840s from sketches he made during long tours of the region from 1838 to1840. After more than 170 years his paintings are still the most beloved and popular illustrations of The Holy Land and Egypt, and are highly sought after by collectors.

Sidon is mentioned in Bible numerous times: It received its name from the "first-born" of Canaan, the grandson of Noah (Genesis 10:15, 19); The Tribe of Zebulun has a frontier on Sidon (Gen. 49:13); The Sidonians long oppressed Israel (Judges 10:12); Solomon entered into a matrimonial alliance with the Sidonians (1 Kings 11:1, 33); Jezebel was a Sidonian princess (1 Kings 16:31); It is frequently referred to by the prophets (Isaiah 23:2, 4, 12; Jeremiah 25:22; 27:3; 47:4; Ezekiel 27:8; 28:21, 22; 32:30; Joel 3:4); Elijah sojourned in Sidon, performing miracles (1 Kings 17:9-24). This magnificent fortress is situated at the head of the Gulf of Akabah on the Red Sea, and lies on the usual route of travellers who visited Petra from Egypt, The fortress was built in the 16th century. 51-0013 Click to view item MOUNT SEIR, WADY EL GHER - from The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia published by F.G. Moon in London 1842-49. Mount Seir is specifically noted as the place that Esau made his home (Genesis 36:8; Joshua 24:4). It was named for Seir, the Horite, whose sons inhabited the land (Genesis 36:20). The children of Esau battled against the Horites and destroyed them (Deuteronomy 2:12). Mount Seir is also given as the location where the remnants "of the Amalekites that had escaped" were annihilated by five hundred Simeonites (I Chronicles 4:42-43). Mount Seir is also referenced in Ezekiel 35:10. The print, being a lithograph in stone has the title and date engraved on the left below the image and Roberts' name on the right.
